  • The Blind Eye at MegaCon: Day 1!

Our first day at our first comic convention promoting The Blind Eye was a huge success!  We met a bunch of cool comic fans and introduced them to the art and story of our comic, and the response was 100% positive!  We gave away collectible post cards with art from The Blind Eye and also promoted our Clown Town entry in the Small Press Idol competition and our Light’s Speed story in the upcoming Reading With Pictures Anthology Vol. 1 (by the way, check out the preview of our story posted this past week)!  It was a lot of fun stumping for all of our various projects and it was terrific for both of us getting back to a comic convention for the first time in many years!  Check out the pictures and captions for each below!

This is just a small sample of the cool craziness we experienced on Day 1 of MegaCon – we also saw a full-size R2-D2 rolling around interacting with people (via remote control), a zombie with a chainsaw clean through his abdomen (I’m guessing a harness of some sort to hold the two ends up…), a lot of Watchmen costumes and a slew of genre movie stars, including Billy Dee Williams (“Works every time!”), Brent Spiner (Data from Star Trek), Nichelle Nichols (Uhura from Star Trek), and James Hong (my personal fave – David Lopan from Big Trouble in Little China)!  We’ll keep you updated on Saturday’s events!

The Blind Eye Chapter One – Screen 11

With Screen Eleven popping up on the site today, let’s take a glimpse at how that page came together, from start to finish.  First, the Screen Eleven script minus the dialogue (in the interests of space and avoiding redundancy):

    Panel 1
Side view as The Creature lands on the flailing Johnson, mostly submerging him beneath the waters.  Johnson fires off a random shot.  Only the tops of his knees, his arms and the front/top portions of his head are visible above the water.

    Panel 2
Identical perspective to Panel 1, as Johnson is completely submerged beneath the water, although it remains disturbed as he obviously struggles beneath.  Only his left foot is visible here, kicking up in an attempt to escape.  The Creature holds his arms in full extension beneath the water, his legs bent in a power crouch as he uses full leverage to hold Johnson down.  The Creature’s head is thrown back slightly in a battle howl.

    Panel 3
Identical perspective to Panels 1 and 2.  Even The Creature’s general stance is the same, although his head is tilted slightly more forward.  Johnson’s leg is not visible here, but his right hand and pistol emerge near The Creature’s sternum.

    Panel 4
View from directly above The Creature’s back as he recoils violently from three gunshots from Johnson’s gun.  Each shot exits his back in a wide triangle – one from his right shoulder blade, another from just below his left and the last from just right of his spine several inches below the first.  His body is obviously wracked from the trauma, and he’s released his grip on Johnson, The Creature’s own arms flailing in this panel, as he jerks backward when shot.  His head turns slightly to his left, revealing his open, screaming mouth.

    Panel 5
Close-up of Johnson’s face, as he sits up from beneath the water.  His mask is ripped open near the vertical midline from the visor down to his mouth, and the visor is completely shattered.  This opening reveals a good portion of his face.  He gasps from lack of oxygen and terror, and his left eye is injured and bleeding.  Specifically, there is a large puncture wound beneath that eye, and there are scratches around the right, although it is more intact.  His right eye is wide with fear, and the left is starting to swell around the lower lid, preventing it from being very wide.

    Rough Layout - Screen 11

For Amanda and I, the next step on any screen after the script is complete involves laying out the rough panel structure.

I generally have an idea of the panel composition as I write the screen script, and I communicate that verbally to Amanda (okay, sometimes I actually sketch it out myself – the horror!).  She translates that onto paper via pencil, complete with vague figures of the characters and objects involved in the positions and postures they will most likely assume in the final screen.  It’s in these layouts that the screens really come to life.  Many times, the panel composition will change significantly from the script as we start putting it together and actually SEE how the overall screen looks.

From that rough layout, she follows with digital line art.  Again on this screen, I actually posed the positioning of The Creature in Panel 4 to show her how I envisioned his posture when shot by Johnson.

    Test Pose for Screen 11

Lettering and coloring, processes for which we’ll go into in more depth in later blogs, follow, and – VOILA!  Finished Screen Eleven!

Screen Ten of The Blind Eye brings “the shark dude,” as many are referring to him, into his first real action as he slices into Mr. Martino with his “teeth.”  Out of all the work we’ve put into The Blind Eye so far, Panel 2 on this screen is near the top of my list of favorite action scenes – his arms thrown wide after cutting Martino’s throat.  Amanda’s work on the eyes within the mask on this page really put you in Martino’s head as he realizes – and then experiences – his imminent demise.

And then there’s the action timeshare with our monster on this one screen - unbeknownst to Johnson at first.  Amanda put together a masterful shot of the creature poised behind Johnson there in Panel 3.  Notice the fluid distortion and shading around Johnson’s submerged legs and the terrific posturing of the monster behind just before that amazing, shrieking leap.  It’s a nice position to be in when your partner is SO good that you are a fan yourself!  Hope you enjoy Screen Ten as much as we both do!

  • Screen 9!

Screen Nine is loaded and ready to read!  The Blind Eye continues!  This one should be a crowd-pleaser, considering the response we’ve gotten to our shark-themed character so far!  He returns with a vengeance, and much to the detriment of Mr. Martino!  Panel 3 on this screen is one of my personal favorites – Martino squinting as he aims up the stairwell at the anticipated crowd to be controlled.  Amanda packed a lot of character into that one little expression.  I love his bravado, readying himself to mow down unsuspecting innocents, as our knife-wielding protagonist surfaces behind him.  Hopefully, you’ll find this screen as cool as we do.  Look for Screen Ten on Thursday morning!
