  • The First Eight!

The first eight screens of The Blind Eye are up for your reading pleasure, so please read through and let us know what you think!  To get the most out of your reading experience, be sure to check out our tips for using the Comic Viewer that I posted in the Library.  As I’ve written elsewhere, we originally put these pages together in mid-2009 as a submission to DC Comics’ web presence, zuda.com, so we’ve had these in the can since July of last year.  We’ve tweaked a few things here and there with them, primarily the water effects and the font size, the latter to ensure the comic text is legible when maximized.  Take a look at the difference in Screen 2 as submitted to Zuda and as posted to our site in its current form:

Amanda and I both improved with regard to our respective roles in creating the story, and, given the amount of time that’s passed since we created these screens, you’ll all see the differences as more recent screens are posted.  What didn’t change at all is the story itself, and I only made one slight adjustment in the dialogue – literally adding just one word.  We were happy with the direction of the story and feel that this introductory sequence sets the table for the overarching plot.

You get a real feel for the Undertown environment and its various inhabitants, if not glimpses of all the major players.  There are two of the big guns in this story, however, and you can pick them out easily, I’m sure.  We want to roll out the characters organically, deliberately – to let you get to know them in their own time but in situations that feature them and allow you to learn who they are and how they’re motivated.  Let us clear up one question many readers have about the shark-themed character seen on Screen 2 of this first eight screens.  The area between the teeth on his costume is NOT a mouth.  The design of that costume is intended to appear as if it is a mouth, but the upper teeth are actually arrayed beneath the chin of his hood, and the lower set is aligned across his upper chest.  We’re really proud of how his look evolved.

    Final Version: Screen 8 - Panel 4

I also want to let you in on one other aspect of our creative process.  Sometimes, when we’re laying out a screen, and I’m not able to clearly articulate to Amanda the positioning of one of the characters, I’ll…ahem…model the pose.  She snaps a digital pic of my posture, and she uses that horrific image to craft creatures even more terrible than me.  Below is an example, this one from Screen 8 – Panel 4.  After a couple of unsatisfactory attempts at the sequence-ending shot of the eye-ripping antagonist holding up his trophy, I finally just contorted my own face into the gaping maw I’d been seeing in my head, and Amanda took a picture of it.

We intend to offer insights and explanations for each screen of The Blind Eye that is released.  If you have specific questions, or if there are parts of our process you want to know more about, just let us know!  Tomorrow morning, we’ll post Screen 9, so be sure to check it out!  And we’ll blog on it tomorrow evening, so look for that, too!
